
As Regional Executive with the American Hospital Association (AHA) in Chicago since 2003, Mr. Byas works with hospitals and health care systems in IL, IN MI, OH, and WI. He ensures that the AHA can respond effectively and quickly on behalf of hospitals in a rapidly changing environment through strong grassroots legislative and political mechanisms. To accomplish this, Mr. Byas focuses on the following.
• Membership retention and recruitment
• Establishing and strengthening executive level relationships
• Identifying market and individual member needs
• Accessing and facilitating AHA resources for members
• Supporting effective advocacy network and policy development for AHA’s federal relations program
During 2004-2005, he served as the Interim President/CEO of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management, a wholly owned subsidiary of AHA. In that role, Mr. Byas focused on the Institute’s mission of working with key partners in expanding leadership opportunities to ethnic minorities in health services management through various strategic initiatives and programs.
Previously, Mr. Byas was the President/CEO of a health care consulting company specializing in the formation of partnerships and the creation of programs and projects designed to improve the health status of community residents and the financial viability of health care systems.
For three years, he taught health policy at DePaul University’s Masters Program in Public Administration. He has also held various senior management positions in health care and social service organizations spanning nearly 30 years.
In addition, Mr. Byas volunteers on the parent advisory board of the Evanston elementary and middle school; serves as the board chair of the March of Dimes—Chicago; and is a board member of the Chicago College of Performing Arts of Roosevelt University.
Mr. Byas received his Masters in Public Health (MPH) from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and his B.A. from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH.
